Indian batting legend, Sunil Gavaskar feels that former India Opener and KKR’s captain Gautam Gambhir can still make a comeback to the national team on the basis of his continuous spectacular performance which is evident in this year’s IPL, as Gambhir is the highest run-getter in the series so far.
Gavaskar praised veteran India discard Gautam Gambhir, who is currently on top of IPL run-getters list with 192 runs and said that he can still make a comeback to the Indian team.
Gambhir’s recent scores read 34, 90*, 64, 38* and he has forged a formidable partnership at the top of the order with Robin Uthappa for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Being a captain, his stability with the bat has drawn praise from the great man himself.
When asked on the issue, Gavaskar reasoned, “Why not? The way he has batted in this competition led from the front and paced his innings alongside different aspects of batsmanship certainly puts him in line for a recall into the Indian team. It’s good to see him bat well.”
Praising the 34-year old’s determination to grind it out, the veteran asserted, “He had gone through a bit of a slump. I think there was a footwork problem. Now, you can see his feet are moving well which means that he has worked very hard and the results are showing.”
“You should never give up. What’s the point of playing in Ranji Trophy and IPL if you don’t feel that you are still good enough to play for India? It is good to see him (Gambhir) perform.”
The legendary opener feels that Gambhir must have worked hard on his footwork which had given him problems earlier.
“He must have worked hard as he has had a bit of footwork problems earlier,” said Gavaskar.
Gavaskar was all praise for young Sarfaraz Khan whose 10-ball-35 has been applauded by one and all.

The young batting sensation is the next best thing to happen in India Cricket and is quite expected to break into the senior team soon.
Gavaskar also commented on Shikhar Dhawan’s slump in form is primarily due to his slow footwork and his tendency to get out cheaply in a few matches at a stretch is the reason why the Delhi left-hander’s failures get highlighted. He opined that it might be due to his reluctant and slow feet movement that causing him all the problems. Either he is not 100% fit or he is struggling with some kind of slothfulness in his body that makes his footwork slow during the batting.
Asked if there is pressure on Dhawan to perform, Gavaskar said “He is constantly under pressure to perform. The problem is when Dhawan fails, he fails in 4-5 matches and people forget the runs that he has scored. He has 9 centuries and around 17 scores of over 50 in limited overs cricket.”
His inconsistency is also not helping the Sun Risers Hyderabad either. But, Gavaskar threw his weight behind the under-fire Dhawan by pointing out that people tend to forget his good days too.
